I really enjoy eating at Jason’s deli. My husband I have been going there for about two months at least once a week to get soup and salad.
Sitting at home one day a thought came to my mind or should I say a question cartoon on my mind – How can this soup be so good without having a ton of sodium in it?
Because I enjoyed the broccoli cheese soup so much, I didn’t want to believe that it was full of sodium beyond what was healthy for me, but in my heart I knew that it was true.
Then I had a flashback of our last visit that is when I noticed that the soup was being dipped out of warmer but the soup itself was in a plastic bag. The plastic bag meant that the soup was made somewhere else and then shipped in to the store. Shipping into the store and means that the soup needs shelflife, which means sodium.
So Sunday we went into the store we asked the young man working there to show us the nutritional facts about the soup and not to our surprise but to our chagrin there were over 1930 g of sodium in a bowl of broccoli cheese soup. The allowed daily requirement of sodium by the USDA is 1800 mg which is a lot and this soup was way over that. That’s just the soup. So if during the day you eat anything else that has sodium, which is very likely , you could O.D.on sodium and your blood pressure go up and could start having swelling in your limbs and not really know why.
Below I have a an image of the Nutritional Facts taken from their website. The seventh column is where the sodium is listed.
Why am I talking about this? I’m talking about this so that we can all remember to be aware when we’re eating out especially if you have special health concerns, such as high blood pressure which I s related to sodium. Those who are diabetic also need to be careful of how many carbs they take in. I am not saying don’t go to Jason’s Deli I’m saying be careful when you eat out, this just happens to be where I was when this happened to me. Pay attention. We left the restaurant with only salad from the salad bar. Yummy and Healthy!
My Recipe for Broccoli Cheese Soup
Steam 1 cup of broccoli for about 7 minutes
Pour 1 cup Almond milk
Blend in a blender till you have the consistency you want
Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese and Blend again. .
Melt 3 Tbsp unsalted butter and stir in.
Garnish with Parmesan cheese
