Films about food are far too diverse ever to be considered a category. The sweetness and light of Babette’s Feast could not be more different from the vitriol of The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, even when you factor out the fabulous Gaultier gloves that Helen Mirren wears.
So while there’s probably never going to be a People’s Choice Award for Best Sit-Down Dinner Scene, that doesn’t mean we can’t have a festival devoted to the pairing of food and film. And the third annual Food & Farm Film Fest, coming to the Roxie the weekend of April 17-19, is just that.
A co-production of Bi-Rite Market and its associated foodie nonprofit 18 Reasons, the F&FFF ranges far and wide, from the possible nutritional benefits of a diet high in ice cream to fungus consumption to the potential for healing the Earth’s ecology through better farming practices. Best of all, for each of the six screenings, the food and film pairing is literal (although final details have yet to be determined for several). Saturday night’s showing of the 1985 Japanese noodle-house comedy Tampopo will feature actual ramen. And as Sunday evening’s The Search for General Tso elaborates on who this military commander was and why his chicken dish is so ubiquitous, theatergoers can nosh on some spicy-sweet, deep-fried thighs from the not-yet-launched Mister Jiu’s.
Tickets for each film are only $15, or $30 for opening night because it’s a five-hour party that wraps up at Four Barrel Coffee. With all due respect to Sno-Caps Nonpareils, popcorn with nutritional yeast, and anything else people eat at the movies, this is much more exciting.
